Week of Aug. 27, 2008 | James Lee Burke

I welcome back James Lee Burke this week with SWAN PEAK, his new Dave Robicheaux novel.

I’ve run out of adjectives to describe Mr. Burke’s work: he’s that good. SWAN PEAK takes place in Montana, and my favorite character in the series, Clete Purcell, is in most of the scenes. Clete is struggling with leaving New Orleans (as is Dave Robicheaux).

The Dave Robicheaux series has now earned a place on the list of the all-time best mystery series. There’s no reason to place a number on brillance, but Mr. Burke belongs in the same category with Raymond Chandler, Dashiel Hammett, Ross MacDonald, John D. MacDonald, and Ross Thomas.

He’s simply one of the best. I, for one, am grateful that he wrote TIN ROOF BLOWDOWN; it is an important American novel (and is now avaialable in paperback). Enjoy!
